Sasha sat in the ambulance at the entrance to the cul-de-sac. The street was full of emergency services vehicles: police cars, science support vans and a pair of fire engines. The fire raging in Tony Gardnerâs home had been put out, and the concrete forecourt and pavement outside his house was sopping wet, channels of water racing along the uneven paving and into the gutter; the walls of the bungalow were blackened by smoke.
The front door had been blown off its hinges and landed right on top of Angie Gardner. But sheâd had a lucky escape, as it had stopped her from getting caught directly in the blast and showered with the glass that flew everywhere when the windows blew out.
Further away, Sasha and Lolly were thrown to the ground, and mostly shielded by the Fiat and the fence. Glass rained down all around them as they lay curled up on the pavement, and pinged against the metal body of Sashaâs open-topped sports car. Other debris â bits of window frame, the tiles ripped from the roof â seemed to take forever to crash to earth, even though everything happened in a matter of moments. The noise of the blast was deafening, making Sashaâs ears ring.
And as flames licked around inside the bungalow, and acrid smoke began to billow from the gaping holes where the door and windows used to be, Sasha and Lolly lifted the door off Angie and carried her to safety on the other side of the street, before calling 999. She had been taken to Southend University Hospital, suffering from concussion, along with Lolly, who sustained a number of deep cuts to her neck and shoulders.
âWhy the long face?â Ajay asked Sasha as she sat getting her own superficial cuts and bruises treated by a paramedic. âYou donât look like a woman who just escaped getting blown to kingdom come.â
âMum and Dad and Con are coming round tonight,â she said, picking a shard of glass from inside one of the cuffs of her shirt. âAnd I was just thinking how I could really do without it.â
âI think you have a good excuse,â he told her. âAlthough it seems to me, the best thing you could do right now is go home and drink a glass or two of wine.â
âI donât see why not,â agreed the paramedic. âYou donât have concussion.â
âLooks like itâs going to be a long night.â DC Craig Power came to the door of the ambulance and looked up at them. âThe firemen have just confirmed it. Thereâs a body in the house.â
Sasha gave Ajay a look, as if to say, There goes that plan. âIs it Tony Gardner?â
âThe deceased hasnât been IDâd, but itâs a white male. The fire investigators wonât let us inside until they give us the all-clear that itâs safe to do so.â
âMaybe weâre looking at this all wrong.â Sasha stood, brushing away the paramedic. âAngie Gardner said Tony and Deano were close when they were younger, stealing, fighting, getting involved in gang stuff.
